After our unforgettable hike through the Vouraikos Canyon , we decided to explore another Greek island - Lefkada. Before that, we had only spent one night on the small island of Elafonisos . It was time for some sea again.
About Lefkada
Lefkada is one of the seven Ionian Islands, connected to the mainland by a movable bridge. The island has a population of approximately 23,000 and is known for its picturesque beaches, such as Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma . Lefkada is also a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, especially kitesurfing and windsurfing. Due to its accessibility and beautiful nature, the island is popular with tourists.
First night on Lefkada
Our first night on Lefkada was greeted with heavy rain forecast, so we found an alternative place to stay in one of the apartments on the island. Despite the weather, we were looking forward to exploring the island. We also caught a stomach virus and were waiting for it to get better.
Staying at Camping Desimi Beach
We spent most of our time in Lefkada at Camping Desimi Beach, which is located right on the beach. The campsite was extremely clean and tidy, which allowed us to have a relaxed stay. We also rented a pedal boat there one afternoon and went to see the nearby cave Σπήλαιο Αγίου Νικολάου , which was a fascinating experience for everyone.
Health problems and the first hospital visit abroad
Our plan was to stay in Lefkada for a few days, enjoy the sun and sea, see some beaches, waterfalls, maybe even conquer the highest point of the island... but it didn't work out. Due to the health problems of our youngest traveler, we had our first experience of a hospital abroad. Unfortunately, we spent one night in the hospital, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't pleasant either. Of course, we were grateful for the quick and professional help we received. Travel information that you may find useful: upon admission to the hospital, a blue European Health Insurance Card was enough, accommodation and medicines were free or almost free (the co-payment for medicines was €2).
While the girls and I were in the hospital, the boys explored the castle of Agia Mavra and the nearby beach. This castle is one of the historical gems of Lefkada and offers an insight into the rich history of the island.
Sleeping outside the camp at Cape Lefkatas lighthouse
One of the most memorable nights was in the far south of the island, at the Cape Lefkatas lighthouse. This part of the island has beautiful cliffs, and a narrow road leads to the lighthouse. The views from the lighthouse to the island of Kefalonia and the passing ferries were magical, especially at sunset.
The beautiful Agiofili Beach
During our visit to Lefkada, we also went swimming at Agiofili Beach . The beach impressed us with its crystal clear sea, which took our breath away. A narrow road leads to this beach, and the parking lot is well-maintained and asphalted. You can also spend the night there during the off-season. The beach was not very popular at the time. Most of the beaches on Lefkada are ideal for me : warm and calm water, gravel (of varying thickness) and clean sea.
Despite the unexpected challenges, our stay on Lefkada was wonderful. The island enchanted us with its natural beauty, crystal clear sea and friendly people.
