First time on a roof top tent trip (August 2023)

Our first trip was the Dolomites. They are a good three hours away from us (we are lucky to live right on the border). We didn't go there fully prepared, but for the first time you have to test things out to see how and what . We went without a table, we stopped at Decathlon along the way and bought some more equipment (gas and chairs).

What did we find out after ten days of traveling with a rooftop tent?

  1. Being without a toilet is not such a big deal . We peed in nature and pooped in toilets we found along the way.

  2. We "showered" with washcloths. We still have room for improvement here, a smaller portable shower or something like that...

  3. It's nice to travel by car. You're really mobile. You can also park in front of Conad in Cortina ( those who know, know :D ).

  4. The tent stands out quite a bit in size. But we still dared and slept for free on the passes. We put ourselves between the campers or in some even more remote parking lot and we had no problems. But passersby looked at our house with interest.

  5. Minimalism is the law! We used almost everything we had with us. We didn't take too much, nor too little. There was even some space left in the car. We bought food supplies as we went.

  6. We have to fill a 20l water canister every day or at least every day and a half. 20l of water goes pretty quickly. :)

  7. Next time we'll take sleeping bags on our trip. Especially if we're going to colder places. Blankets are enough for the sea, but not for the Dolomites. :)

  8. Our tent can withstand the rain! It withstood a real storm and didn't leak anything.

  9. Condensation and humidity. And also morning dew. We have to leave the tent at least slightly open and airy overnight, otherwise in the morning everything is covered in drops (on the inside). After arriving home, we also dried it well in the scorching Karst sun.

  10. The burner performed great even in the wind. We just need to finish the gas hose or connection so we won't be so wasteful with the cartridges.

  11. The kitchen and kitchen drawer that Vasja made himself are EXCELLENT.

  12. Refrigerator. We had a small refrigerator for the car , either electric or gas. But we didn't take a gas cylinder. Next time we will. :) We made really short trips, so the refrigerator didn't get cold at all during the drive. But the food didn't spoil either, because it was cold in the evening and at night anyway .

If I draw a line:

We had a great time and this way of traveling suits us. We are already looking forward to the next adventure. Now we would like to go somewhere south.
