Holy Trinity, Ecomuseum and Petelinjsko Lake - a full-day trip to Pivško

This weekend we explored Pivško for the second time. Last time we visited the Military History Park and went to Primož. We also got a discount for the Ecomuseum there, so we decided to visit Pivško again. This time, the area around the Ecomuseum of the Intermittent Lakes of Pivško.

In the morning, we first set out for Holy Trinity.

HOLY TRINITY, 1106 m

  • Walking time: 45 minutes ascent
  • Suitable for children: 3 years and up. Also suitable for children in a baby carrier and hiking backpack.
  • Starting point: Sevski gozd. In the village of Trnje, follow the green signs for Sv. Trojica. We pass the military training ground, turn left and go up the dirt road. The road is nicely paved in some places, but in some places it is more muddy due to the train. We reach the brown tourist board where we park the car and set off on foot to Sv. Trojica.
  • Description of the route: At the sign, we turn right along the path, first passing a meadow with a hunting lodge . Then we walk for 45 minutes along a wide path, which is nicely marked with markings and well-trodden. In some places it is more gentle, in other places it climbs steeply. We cross the Madakam path where we choose our own access to the summit. We can go along the wide macadam road or through the forest on a path. We chose the path through the forest. It led us to the grassy peak, where the church stands. Unfortunately, we didn't have a view because we caught cloudy weather. But we will come back for this view sometime...

At the top of the Holy Trinity there is a church with a bell tower.

After climbing Sv. Trojica, we decided to visit the Ecomuseum of the Pivska Intermittent Lakes. The museum is open on weekends. Check out the exact schedule on their website. The museum is new and extremely interesting. We learned everything there about karst phenomena, intermittent lakes, maintaining a clean environment, and a lot about the animals from this area. It is very interactive and you are allowed to touch and try almost everything (except for some screens). We liked the beast prints in kinetic sand the most, the large puzzle, and the pollution display. The museum is suitable for all ages. The tour took us a good hour. We learned and found out a lot. They have a family ticket (costs €20). We really, really, really recommend visiting the museum. A boy in the Pivka Intermittent Lakes Museum. On the wall is an inscription: We are at home here, where the earth drinks the water.

After visiting the museum, we walked to one of the intermittent lakes: Petelinjsko Lake . There are 17 intermittent lakes in Pivka. Petelinjsko Lake is the second largest (the largest is Palško Lake) and the water remains in it the longest, up to half a year every year - it is full in spring and until the beginning of the dry season. It is home to an endemic - a 1.5 cm large crustacean, the karst scutum. The lake is only a 15-minute walk from the Ecomuseum. The trail is very well marked and takes you past pasture meadows along a wide gravel road all the way to the lake. A family stands by the Peteljinski Intermittent Lake on a cloudy day.

The rain drove us home, otherwise we would definitely have stayed.

We were on the trip in March 2024. You can also extend your day in Pivka by visiting other cultural, historical and natural attractions: Pivka Military History Park and Primož.
