4+ winter climbs for beginners in the Bovec area

If you are one of those who are not familiar with avalanches and feel awe of winter tours, I have some ideas for winter climbs suitable for beginners in the Bovec area. However, the mandatory equipment that I recommend is tamale crampons and gaiters. All routes are usually well-trodden and quite well-visited.

  1. Krnsko Lake

  2. Mangart Saddle

On the road or on the trail. You can't go wrong on the road, but the trail is usually well-trodden.

  3. Mountain below Montaž (Sella Nevea, Malga Montasio)

5km route (on a wide asphalt road, which is closed in winter) to Rifugio Giacomo di Brazza (1660m). You pack up in Sella (right next to the first buildings). The hut is usually open on weekends and holidays.

  4. Chukla

The trail is mostly on land, but below the summit there is usually snow and a well-trodden path. You can find the trail description here . The summit is sunny and offers a BEAUTIFUL view of Bovec, Kanin, Rombon, etc.

I will not write down detailed route descriptions because these are very popular destinations. For route descriptions, I rely on the website hribi.net . In addition to the above, there are also wonderful winter climbs:

  • Matajur

  • Kobarid chair

  • if there is not too much snow, also Svinjak (careful, because the back part is quite exposed and frozen at low temperatures)

  • Monte Lussari, Sv. Višarje ( path description here , but you can simplify the descent with the gondola, the path is shady and usually frozen)

  • Trilateral

  • From the Belopeška jezera to the Rif. Zacchi (description here )
